This was the day I learned that toddlers and sarcasm do not mix.
I got out a carton of ice cream. Alice saw and squealed, “ice cream!” I joked, “Alice, what makes you think you get ice cream? This is mommy’s ice cream.”
That poor girl.
Alice’s face screwed up in horror and genuine sadness as I quickly said, “Oh Alice, Mom’s teasing. I’m teasing. Sweetie, mommy’s teasing.” I quickly shoved a bite of ice cream into Alice’s mouth before her first tears flowed so she wouldn’t cry.
Alice, relieved, began to repeat, “Mommy’s teasing. Mommy’s teasing.”
Disaster just barely averted.
